Alan Jermaine
Alan Jermaine retired as U8 principal from Papatoetoe Intermediate after a career of 47 years. His career includes the principalship of four schools including a contributing school, two full primaries and an intermediate. He was also a Deputy Principal of four schools.
He has held high office in educational organisations including the presidency of the APPA, presidency of the NZEI [Auckland], treasurer of NZEI Committee of Branches for Auckland-Northland, national secretary of NZ AIMS and a number of other offices. People may remember the educational magazine founded by Alan – “Education Today” – that, under new ownership, is still publishing today.
Alan is a Fellow of the NZEI, a Fellow of the NZEAS [now NZEALS], a Travelling Fellow [1996] of the ASB-APPA Trust; and has been presented with the Service with Distinction Award of the APPA and recently achieved the APPA’s highest award, Distinguished Fellow of the APPA.
Outside of education, Alan was also an Army officer. He retired from the TF Army in 1980 after fourteen years service. During his service Alan reached the rank of major and commanded both Administration Company and Northland Rifle Company of the Auckland Regiment.
Several years before retiring from the army the Governor General, Sir Keith Holyoake, decorated him for his military service at Government House, Wellington. Alan’s honours were crowned by a QSM in 2006.
